Online Shopping In Australia: Addressing the Problems to Improve your Experience

By Gavin Mcgowan

Online shopping has been a phenomenon that has swept the globe in the last decade. At first it was just Ebay but now, it's commonplace to see online stores on almost every website. Even though Australia is smaller than the US and UK, our online shopping industry is just as competitive.

A lot of people are still hesitant about shopping online. What about theft and scammers? How about all the bad stories about unresponsive staff? How about not being able to contact the dealer who sold you the goods? These problems will be discussed in this article. At the end of the article you should feel more comfortable with shopping online and know how to look for trustworthy sites.

Scammers and Theft

It's true that this sort of thing does happen online but over the years, online security has been addressed to a greater extent, so much so that the people who cheat you out of your hard-earned money can be identified and caught. There are several companies online that simply exist to provide security seals to websites that want to act as storefronts. An example of one of these security seals is Verisign. If you see this distinctive tick on websites, you should be assured that your money and banking details are safe.

Unresponsive Staff

There are bad stories of people who have asked for a refund on their purchases but never got one because their queries and concerns were simply passed on to a different department until it ended up forgotten. This usually only happens at stores that are too busy trading to the general public and are negligent with their online store front. Rest assured, this thing is happening less and less and a lot of the websites that operate as stores online focus heavily on customer satisfaction online. Their wares are at a warehouse and not available to the public so the only way you can get them is online.

Contacting the Dealer

So you eventually receive what you ordered for. It comes in a box, all wrapped up tightly with plenty of tape and styrofoam. You open it up eagerly, having waited weeks for it to find that it's the wrong colour. It's not a big deal but you specifically requested red. You go back to the website, look for the "contact us" link and click and look for a phone number or email address. You've had some bad experiences with emails, where they did not respond at all to you. So you try the phone number. It rings and rings, but in the end, no one picks up. So then what? You can't exactly march back up the store front and demand a refund; everything's done online.

What you should do if you suspect that the owner who sold you the product is being dishonest is to always remember than you can report them to the authorities. You can send an email warning them that they're not responding to your enquiries to try and hurry them up but in the end if they're not helpful, you've always got the upper hand. You should have the receipt in hand (or sent via email) as proof of your purchase.

Just remember. Only deal with people who tell you that they're safe to deal with and prove it and that you always have the upper hand when you're shopping online.
